The Telegraph Schools' Chess Championship 2002 Jamshedpur Edition
Media Release before the event

Horlicks presents
3RD THE TELEGRAPH SCHOOLS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2002.
JAMSHEDPUR EDITION
The Telegraph, the Calcutta-based leading English daily of the Eastern Region of India, has been sponsoring this event for the last 15 years. The idea behind organising this championship was to promote chess from the grassroots level. For the first 12 years, the championship was successfully held in Calcutta and since year 2000, the meet has been spread out to different other regions of eastern India. The Jamshedpur and Guwahati legs were introduced in the year 2000 while Bhubaneswar has been added to the calendar last year. Like the Jamshedpur and Guwahati editions, the Bhubaneswar leg too generated great enthusiasm and attracted huge number of entries.
The Telegraph Schools Chess Championship has clearly established itself as the premier school level championship of the country. So much so that from 1999, the Calcutta event became the only school-level rating chess tournament of the country.
The Telegraph School Chess Championship has, over the years, produced national-level stars like double GM-norm holder Sandipan Chanda, Tejas Bakre and Surya Sekhar Ganguly IMs Neelotpal Das, and Shanker Roy, former world under-12 champion Deep Sengupta and former under-12 Asian champion Abhijit Gupta. Even Bangladeshs GM Ziaur Rahman and single GM norm holder Reefat Bin Sattar came to the limelight from the Telegraph Schools Chess.
