Joydeep Dutta of Kumar Ashutosh Institution annexed The Telegraph Schools’ Chess Trophy with a last round draw against Baishaki Das of Jamshedpur. Joydeep tied with Tanmoy Pattanayak of Mitra Insititution(Main) on 9 points, but was declared champion on account of his better progressive score.For his efforts Joydeep will receive the Telegraph trophy and a cash prize of Rs.10,000/-.

Tanmoy Pattanayak took the second spot with a quick draw against Souvik Chakraborty of Narmada High School.

Baishaki Das wasted an advantageous position against Joydeep and drew her game to take the 3rd spot.

Souvik Chakraborty was declared 4th while Samput Maalick of Holy Home took the 5th spot.

St. James School was declared the best school totalling 31 points well ahead of second placed Don Bosco on 25 points.

The Telegraph Schools’ Chess Championship needs no introduction as it has been the cradle of Bengal
chess for the last 14 years. The championship has, in the past, thrown up players like Surya Sekhar Ganguly,
Sandipan Chanda, Neelotpal Das, Nisha Mohota, Saheli Dhar Barua,Shankar Roy, Somak Palit and many more.

FIDE RATING

Since 1999, this tournament has been given the status of a FIDE rating meet by AICF. Once again the participants
will be able to pick up vital ELO rating points from this meet which will boost their career in the sport.
The meet remains the only school chess championship in the country to have this rating status.
